WHAT IS APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS? Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an applied science
based on the basic research science of Behavior Analysis. The field of ABA is devoted to the
understanding and improvement of human behavior. But other disciplines
claim the same intent. What sets ABA apart? Among other differences, there are two major features of ABA that distinguish it
and contribute to its success across a wide range of behaviors, settings, and populations:
- Behaviors targeted for intervention are defined very specifically in order to
allow reliable observation and measurement of quantitative properties of behavior such as frequency and duration.
How often does the behavior occur? How long does it last?
- Interventions (treatments) focus on identifying and changing very specific events or conditions (in the setting
where the target behavior occurs) responsible for the occurrence or non-occurrence of the target behavior. What happens
before the behavior? What happens after?
Thus, quality ABA treatment programs are collecting data every step of the way, frequently monitoring progress
and adjusting programs as needed for individual learners.
If you are searching for an ABA program, look for the
key features of ABA programs, and make sure the program
is run by a qualified behavior analyst. If you are searching for
an ABA program specifically for treatment of an autistic person, beware of practitioners who may be taking advantage
of the surge of interest in ABA in the treatment of autism,
claiming to implement genuine ABA programs when they are not.
